Ever since Justin Chambers revealed he was leaving Grey’s Anatomy late last year, fans have been wondering how the writers would explains Alex Karev’s absence and eventual exit. And it now looks like we’re finally going to get that answer during the March 5 episode of the series. Following this week’s episode, in which Jo (Camilla Luddington) revealed Alex “left” her, an emotional “goodbye” video teased what will likely be a very emotional hour of television.

In the 30-second teaser, flashbacks of Alex’s 16-season journey are shown as A Great Big World‘s “Say Something” plays in the background. The mix of the two is a surefire way to bring us, let alone anyone, to tears. But unfortunately, not much else is revealed. However, a lot of the flashback scenes include characters crying, so we fear Alex’s exit will be one that feels like a severe punch to the gut. But then again, we’d be sad about any possible outcome, unless Alex reunited with Izzie (Katherine Heigl) after learning she secretly fertilized one of their frozen embryos. We can dream, right?

After announcing his exit, and filming his final episode (which aired in November), Justin told our sister site, TVLine, that he is looking to to “diversify” his “acting roles and career choices”. He added, “As I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”

New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy air Thursdays at 9pm on ABC. Alex’s goodbye will be shown next week, March 5.
