Snoop Dogg has been sharing some cryptic quotes on his Instagram page over the last few days. One message read, “Back in the day, if someone hated you, it meant you did something WRONG. Now a days, it means you did something RIGHT.” Meanwhile, a second post said, “People who can’t communicate think everything’s an argument.” He didn’t specify who the quotes were directed at, but many fans think it’s his way of responding to Eminem referencing him on a new song.
Em dropped his surprise new album, Music To Be Murdered By – Side B, and he threw some shade at Snoop on the song “Zeus.” In the third verse, Eminem rapped, “Diplomatic as I’m trying to be, last thing I need is Snoop doggin’ me, man, dogg, you was like a God to me, nah, not really, I had “dog” backwards, but I’m starting to think, all these people takin’ shots at me, s***, it’s no wonder.” The lyrics came after Snoop released his list of the 10 greatest rappers of all time over the summer — and left Eminem off of it.
At the time, Snoop’s decision caused some controversy, and he opened up about it in an interview with The Breakfast Club at the end of July. “Eminem, the great white hope. White rappers had zero respect in rap,” Snoop explained. “Dr. Dre has probably put Eminem in the position that he would be considered one of the top 10 rappers ever. I don’t think so, but the game thinks that he’s [in the] top 10 lyricists and everything that comes with it. That’s just because he’s with Dr. Dre.” He added, “There’s some n****as in the 80s that he couldn’t f*** with. Like Rakim, like Big Daddy Kane, like KRS-One, like LL Cool J, like Ice Cube.”
Meanwhile, Snoop isn’t the only artist who Em mentions on “Zeus” — the song also features an apology to Rihanna. The apology stemmed from another Eminem song that leaked in 2019. In the leaked audio, which was reportedly recorded in 2009, Eminem rapped, “Of course I side with Chris Brown, I’d beat a b*** down, too.” Of course, this was a reference to Chris assaulting Rihanna before the 2009 Grammy Awards. Obviously, Eminem recognized how offensive those lyrics were, and on “Zeus,” he said, “Wholehearted apologies, Rihanna, for that song that leaked, I’m sorry Ri, It wasn’t meant to cause you grief, regardless, it was wrong of me.”
