The NYC Pride Parade is arguably the most famous in the United States. Every year, thousands of LGBTQ+ participants and their straight allies pour into the streets of Manhattan to let their voices be heard. It’s a fun and memorable event, where marchers dress up in their most dramatic makeup and hair looks, wave rainbow flags, and let onlookers know that they’re proud to be there.

The 2016 NYC Pride Parade had a little bit of a different tone than past years. It was held on June 26, 2016 — just two weeks after the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Omar Mateen murdered 49 people and injured 53 more during the massacre at the LGBT venue. Pride is also a protest, and this year, the victims of the Pulse massacre were remembered fiercely. Gays Against Guns led the charge during the event, and some protesters even waved “Love Trumps Hate” banners — a call out to Donald Trump.
