The city prepares for the arrival of the hurricane Maria, category 5, which is approaching the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico with winds of 160 miles per hour, storm surges and torrential rains, according to the National Hurricane Center. The Board of Supervision and Financial Administration for Puerto Rico expressed concern about the impact that Hurricane Maria may have on the island and the safety of its inhabitants, and reaffirmed its commitment to ‘assist in the reconstruction efforts’ later.

As of 11:00 am EDT, the category three storm was located about 60 miles east of Martinique and moving toward the west-northwest near 10 miles per hour. Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center say Maria, which has maximum sustained winds of near 120 miles per hour, is expected to be a ‘dangerous major hurricane’ as it moves through the Leeward Islands and the northeastern Caribbean Sea.
